Cannot renew Defender account

When I try to renew my Defender account, the system tells me that either my user name or my email address is in use. My Defender account name is the same as my Sluggy Forum user name: The Lost, Lurking. It's been suggested that capitalization may be a problem; I tried both with and without, and get the same problem.

Part of the problem, as I see it, is that there is no explicit renewal mechanism. The only facility available is for joining for the first time. Naturally, if someone was trying to sign up using my account name, it should fail. Which is just what I'm seeing.
